FAQ - The Book of Separation

Do I need any special equipment for this experience?

Nothing super special. You do need a computer with a browser and an internet connection capable of streaming. You may use headphones or speakers. You need a phone with which you can send pictures to your friend, and a phone which can receive phone calls. You will also need a pen and a piece of paper and a book. Any book will do, but longer is better. It should be a book that reminds you of your friend. There will be no video chat. iPads will not work in place of your computer.


My sound isn’t working.

A few troubleshooting steps: 1. Make sure your volume isn’t muted or too low (hey, we all do it!) 2. Check that your computer isn’t connected to a bluetooth device. 3. Check to see if you need to un-mute your browser tab. Some browsers mute new websites you visit. If you see a speaker icon (next to onething.org), click on it to un-mute the website. 4. as we mentioned before, iPads will not work for this experience. I need help right now! How do I reach you?


Does this have to be for 2 people?Can I do this alone? Or can three people do this at once?

This is an intimate, interactive, 2-person experience. Both people must be in the same show, with their unique ticket links, at the same time.


Can I pause the show? Or rewind?

Nope. As with an in-person performance, the show is made for you in real time. You and your friend will be traveling together and will be in contact in real time. Our system is designed to make sure what you see and hear is aligned at all times.


If you are offline for a bit, or your internet lags, we will hold the show, and your friend’s, for up to 30 seconds for you to get back online.

What if I have a problem with my internet?


Why is the phone call being recorded? What happens with that recording?

The phone call at the beginning is how we customize your show. There are multiple choice questions we use to decide where your friend will be traveling and there are recorded answers that your friend will hear in their journey. We do not use these recordings or choices for any other purpose. If you do not participate in the recorded phone call, your friend’s experience will be set to a default set of choices, and they will not hear your voice in their journey.


Yes, you can experience the show with a friend in another time zone or country. For technical reasons, this show will not work if your phone number is in China or a handful of other countries. It does work in all countries in North and South America, Europe, India, Iceland, Japan, Australia, Taiwan, Singapore, South Korea, New Zealand, South Africa, and most others. If you are in parts of Africa, Asia, or smaller island nations not covered by the list above, please check with us before signing up.

Will this work internationally? Do both people have to be in the same time zone?


What if I am late? or I’m going to miss the show at the last minute?

The journey will begin when both people are ready. We recommend letting your friend know if you are going to be significantly late, as they’ll be waiting in our lobby for that time. We’ll play them some music and tell them a story, so it’s not the worst thing in the world if you’re a few minutes behind. But do let your friend know if you’re going to miss the show, as they’ll just be waiting. We can hold your show for up to 30 minutes. Just contact your friend and make sure that you both click your ticket links within the same 5-10 minute period. If you are later than this, as with a stage show, you will have missed the show. If you need to reschedule, contact us at least 24 hours in advance.


Is there a way to send feedback?

What’s up with T-Mobile? Why is the intake call different for T-Mobile users?

T-Mobile uses different protocols than other cellular systems. Because of this, recording times for interview questions must be shorter, as T-Mobile will hang up the call if they are too long (more than 30s). We will automatically detect your network and shorten your recording times to avoid hangups. Unfortunately, most small US carriers are actually run by T-Mobile, so if you’re on Boost Mobile, or Consumer Wireless, or even Google Fiber, your call may be carried by T-Mobile. We have made adjustments to the show to accomodate this issue; you probably won’t notice the changes.


I never got a ticket link or the link isn’t working

You can reach out to us at producer@odysseyworks.org. The ticket link will be sent to you via an email from Odyssey Works. It is not included in communications from Eventbrite. Look for an email from us. You and your friend will both have received both links - one for each of you, so ask your friend first if they have your ticket link and can forward it.


Nope. Every person’s experience is customized to that person. Your journey is aligned with your friend’s, but it is not the same.
